Surgical Weight Loss

Greater Curve Plication

Laproscopic Greater Curve Plication (LGCP) Surgery

The laparoscopic greater curve plication (often called greater curve plication) procedure is one of the newest weight loss surgeries. It achieves similar restriction of gastric content as that of the sleeve gastrectomy procedure, without removing any of the stomach. Instead, the stomach is plicated (or folded) in on itself and sutured together. The advantage of this less invasive surgical method is that since there is no staple line, the risk of any leaking is greatly reduced.

The disadvantages of greater curve plication are as follows:

  • This procedure is only a private-pay option-it is not covered by any insurance companies. This is a newer operation, so we don’t have long-term data on its successes. The six- and 12-month results have been very promising, but this does not guarantee long-term durability.
  • One advantage of the more invasive sleeve gastrectomy is that the part of the stomach that gets removed secretes a hormone, called ghrelin, that regulates hunger. After removal of this part of the stomach, hunger levels are oftentimes decreased. While patients do report hunger suppression after undergoing greater curve plication surgery, it is likely not to the same degree as for a sleeve gastrectomy procedure.

BENEFITS OF SURGERY

Since none of the stomach tissue is removed during greater curve plication, it’s a less invasive alternative to other surgical weight loss procedures. One of the most important benefits of this procedure, however, is that it promotes quick weight loss. It is normal for patients to lose at least half their excess weight within two years of surgery, and with adherence to the right diet and exercise plan patients typically keep most of that weight off in the long term.

Greater curve plication surgery also tends to improve many medical conditions you might have, including asthma, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, obstructive sleep apnea, high cholesterol and gastroesophageal disease (GERD). By resolving such conditions, this procedure indirectly reduces the risk of heart attack, heart disease and cancer, improving both life expectancy and quality of life. In our Toledo-area clinic, Dr. Fourman provides gastric plication to help our patients improve their health, bolster their self-esteem and hopefully live longer, more joyful lives.
