Is Weight Loss Surgery Right for Me?
If you need to lose a significant amount of weight and feel like surgery is your last chance to have a healthy body and live a normal life, then bariatric surgery may be a wise decision for you. Surgical weight loss has been proven to reduce the risk of weight-related health problems that put many people’s lives in danger, such as heart disease, diabetes and severe sleep apnea.
If your doctor has told you that you that your weight is jeopardizing your health, or you feel like "it’s finally time" to stop living life on the sidelines, Mercy Weight Management Center is here for you. We have an unmatched commitment to helping our bariatric patients lose weight—and our program gives you the tools, skills and ongoing support to keep it off for life.
GUIDELINES
If you’re considering surgical weight loss to help you be healthier and lead a more active life, you need to meet the following medical criteria:
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- You have a long, unsuccessful history of trying to lose weight through diet and exercise.
- Your body mass index (BMI) is 40 or higher. (Someone with a BMI of 40 or more is usually at least 100 pounds over his or her recommended weight.)
- Your BMI is 35 to 39.9 and you have a serious weight-related health problem (called a comorbidity), such as: type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, severe sleep apnea or gastroesophageal disease (GERD).
If you meet the medical requirements above, our staff will evaluate which surgical option is the best fit for your specific health and life situation, in addition to evaluating your personality and ability to make postsurgical lifestyle changes.
Keep in mind that bariatric surgery isn’t a "quick fix" and isn’t right for everyone. After the procedure, you’ll need to make permanent, positive changes in your lifestyle in order to achieve long-term weight loss success. At Mercy Weight Management Center, we specialize in coaching and motivating you to successfully make those changes. Our knowledgeable, caring support team will give you unmatched guidance on nutrition and exercise to help you lose the weight for life after your bariatric procedure.
NONSURGICAL OPTIONS
If you don’t meet the guidelines for surgical weight loss, or you’re just not ready for bariatric surgery, Mercy Weight Management Center has a highly effective nonsurgical weight loss program that may be a better choice for you.
On average, our nonsurgical weight loss patients lose between 30 and 60 pounds. And one thing that makes our program different from every other weight loss program in the Toledo area is that we have a unique commitment to giving our patients the personal education, guidance, coaching and support they need to reach their goals and maintain a healthy weight for the rest of their life.
