Recovery After Bariatric Surgery at Mercy Weight Management Center in Toledo, Ohio

RECOVERY FROM BARIATRIC SURGERY

A big part of having any kind of bariatric surgery is following your surgeon’s post-op instructions, changing your lifestyle afterward by eating a healthier diet, consuming smaller meals throughout the day and engaging in a dedicated exercise program.

While everyone’s recovery from weight loss surgery is unique, here are some general milestones you can expect after having bariatric surgery:

AFTER GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY

Usually Two Days in the Hospital. After surgery, patients are on a restricted dietary plan while the stomach heals. Foods are gradually reintroduced to the diet over the next few months, beginning with an all-liquid diet and eventually incorporating a wider range of foods as the body grows accustomed to the new digestive tract. Because the size of the stomach has been reduced, gastric bypass patients need to eat very small meals several times a day. Each gastric bypass surgery patient works with Mercy Weight Management Center’s bariatric dietitian, Theresa Tate, before and after surgery to plan a diet that meets his or her needs for weight loss and nutrition.

As the body adjusts to rapid weight loss and a new diet, it is not uncommon for patients to feel tired, achy, sick and even depressed. This is generally the most challenging part of the weight loss process. If you do experience these symptoms post-surgery, our Toledo-area support team can help you deal with them appropriately. Weight loss surgery represents a lifelong commitment on the part of both patients and healthcare providers, and our unmatched support team will do everything possible to help you reach your weight loss goals. We offer counseling services and comprehensive medical care to help our patients succeed in their lifelong commitment to health.

While every patient’s recovery is unique, most gastric bypass patients are generally off from work from 2-4 weeks, and are able to resume normal activities after four weeks.

AFTER SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY OR GREATER CURVE PLICATION SURGERY

Usually One Day in the Hospital. Very similar to the recovery from stomach bypass surgery, patients are on a restricted dietary plan while the stomach heals after surgery. Foods are gradually reintroduced to the diet over the next few months, beginning with an all-liquid diet and eventually incorporating a wider range of foods as the body grows accustomed to the new digestive tract. Because the size of the stomach has been reduced, gastric sleeve patients need to eat very small meals several times a day. Each sleeve gastrectomy patient works with Mercy Weight Management Center’s bariatric dietitian, Theresa Tate, before and after surgery to plan a diet that meets his or her needs for weight loss and nutrition.
